Gastown

Gastown is Vancouver’s oldest commercial district and is renowned for its charming Victorian architecture. The area began with a single tavern founded by John ‘Gassy Jack’ Deighton in 1867 and has since evolved while maintaining its historic allure and unique character. Today, it’s a vibrant neighborhood where Victorian buildings host trendy fashion boutiques, meticulously curated decor shops, unique galleries, and some of the city’s finest dining spots. It’s a popular gathering place for stylish locals and perfect for exploring on foot.

This neighborhood is a vibrant mix of contemporary fashion and decor boutiques, tourist shops, restaurants, nightclubs, and upscale residences. It’s also home to various professional offices, including law firms, architecture firms, tech businesses, art galleries, music and art studios, tattoo parlors, and acting and film schools.

The iconic steam-powered clock at Cambie and Water Street is Gastown’s most famous landmark. Although originally designed with some flaws (which required it to be powered by electricity at one point), the clock’s steam mechanism was restored with help from local businesses. Now, it stands as a modern creation promoted for its heritage appeal.

Gastown boasts a range of excellent restaurants, making it a top choice for a special night out. Whether you’re in the mood for farm-to-table European dishes, inventive Asian fusion, or anything in between, Gastown’s dining scene won’t disappoint. If you prefer a lighter fare, try a wine bar for a cheese and charcuterie platter, or catch a game at one of the pubs or sports bars.

For a family-friendly option, The Old Spaghetti Factory offers traditional Italian dishes in a nostalgic setting. The PiDGiN, on the other hand, provides a stylish twist on Asian cuisine with its French-influenced dishes. Gastown is also a hub for cocktails, with a range of bars serving everything from classic drinks to creative new concoctions.

Shopping in Gastown is a great experience. Its blend of souvenir shops, art galleries, independent fashion boutiques, and modern gift stores offers something for everyone. The neighborhood also features some outstanding art galleries where you can find unique items like silver jewelry, art pieces, and carvings.
