South Main
Just southeast of downtown Vancouver, South Main stretches from East 2nd to East 33rd Avenues. Once considered the “wrong side of the tracks,” this area has transformed into Vancouver’s version of New York’s Brooklyn, thanks to hipsters opening galleries, breweries, and boutiques.
Since South Main is primarily a residential neighborhood, its charm lies in mingling with the locals and leisurely strolling with a coffee from one of the many local roasters. However, there are some notable spots to check out during your walk.
True to its eclectic spirit, Main Street is home to a mix of affordable eats and high-end dining options. Whether you’re in the mood for Lebanese, Malaysian, South Indian, or Peruvian cuisine, you’ll find quality options here. It’s also known for some of the city’s best Chinese food, particularly high-end dim sum.
South Main is also a haven for coffee lovers, with several renowned roasters and cafés lining Main Street. But what really sets South Main apart is its burgeoning craft beer scene. Between East 2nd and East 8th Avenues, you’ll find five different brewery tasting rooms within a couple of blocks.
While South Main isn’t a traditional shopping district, its many independent stores offer unique finds. You can get a growler from a local craft brewery—these refillable glass bottles often feature cool artwork and will give you a taste of beer you can’t get elsewhere. Or you can pick up some beans from one of the city’s top coffee roasters for a special brew.
The neighborhood is also great for vintage clothing and antiques, especially along the stretch from East 16th Avenue southward. You’ll come across stylish boutiques and quirky indie shops, including a soap dispensary, a hemp bedding store, a jukebox shop, and even a cowboy outfitter. Safe to say, shopping on South Main is always a fun experience.
