Granville Island

Granville Island

In the early 1900s, Granville Island was bustling with factories, plants, and sawmills. Today, it’s a vibrant hotspot, loved by locals and visitors alike. Although it’s technically a sandpit rather than an island, it sits just south of downtown Vancouver, right beneath the Granville Bridge. Despite being home to around 300 businesses, studios, and facilities, Granville Island maintains a charming, old-world feel. It’s a haven for craftsmen and artists, and preserves a strong tradition of artistry and skill.

One of the most fun ways to reach Granville Island (which is popular with people of all age) is by taking one of the cute mini-tugboat ferries that cross False Creek. Once you arrive, the main attraction is the Public Market. Inside, you’ll find a bustling array of stalls offering fresh produce, gourmet foods, baked goods, and seafood. For food enthusiasts, a walking tour of the market can provide a deeper dive into its offerings. Even if you're just casually browsing, the market’s food court has a range of options, from Japanese noodles and Greek gyros to Italian pizza.

Beyond the market, you can enjoy a show at one of the island’s theaters, explore art galleries, or engage in outdoor activities like kayaking or paddleboarding. The market itself is often hailed as a “food lover’s paradise,” where you can easily pick up ingredients for a spontaneous picnic with cheese, charcuterie, bread, and fresh produce. If you prefer something quick and convenient, the food court at the market’s end is a great spot. For a more relaxed dining experience, you can enjoy waterfront seafood and sip on local beverages from the island’s sake maker (Canada’s first), spirits distillery, or breweries.

Granville Island also caters to families. Kids can indulge in magical fudge at Olde World Fudge or explore the Kids Market, a special area dedicated to children’s toys, puppets, and clothing. The island’s Water Park, North America’s largest free water park, is a huge hit with younger visitors.

For those fascinated by marine life, the Prince of Whales offers incredible tours to see humpback whales, porpoises, orcas, and other sea creatures in their natural environment. If you’re interested, you can join a tour to learn about these majestic animals from knowledgeable guides while enjoying complimentary tea and hot chocolate.

Overall, with its mix of unique crafts, talented artisans, outdoor gear, and gourmet stores, Granville Island is a fantastic place to find memorable souvenirs. Be sure to explore the Net Loft building for First Nations art, B.C. wines, and other one-of-a-kind gifts.
